Results And Resilience
Results and resilience
#EXCELLENCE
07/07/2021
For JESS Sixth Form students, they have spent the last two years with disrupted study, a pandemic and enforced quarantines. To achieve the outstanding academic results for the International Baccalaureate (IB) and BTEC examinations this year is testament to their resilience.
The results ensure that JESS retains its title as a world class school delivering an outstanding education and perhaps more telling was the significant value added to our students coming with mixed ability ranges who outperformed across all metrics to attain impressive results, proving once again that JESS is a place where all students can, quite simply, excel.
International baccaleaurate results
For a non-selective school catering to International Baccalaureate (IB) cohorts of 90-100 students, JESS has produced phenomenal results since it began offering the IB Diploma and IB Diploma Courses. The school has consistently performed above the IB world average overall, in individual subject areas and in the core areas of Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge.
The school’s overall average of 39 points is 6 points above the world average of 32.9 points. New records were set this year with 97.8% of students achieving 30 points or more, 87% of students achieving 35 points or more; the equivalent of two A* and two As at A-level and 42.4% of students achieving 40 points and above, equivalent to more than 4 A* at A-level. Five students, were awarded the maximum 45 points and right behind them are four students with 44 points so once remarks are available we will know more.
The five students who achieved the maximum 45 points at IB are :
- Paula Ruseter studying Medicine at Heidelberg University, Germany
- Ria Gardiner studying Law at University of Groningen, The Netherlands
- Rohan Maliekkal studying Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, USA
- Sachi Baviskar studying Medicine at the University of Plymouth
- Xavier Roberts studying Anthropology and Archaeology at Durham University, UK
These results that would turn the head of any university in the world and indeed, JESS students will be taking up university places in some of the best universities around the world including the UK, the USA, Canada, the Netherlands, Germany, South Africa, Australia and the UAE.
BTEC results
JESS began offering the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diplomas in Art, Business and in Sport in 2019 and each year the results and numbers of students choosing to study this more practical pathway are increasing.
Each year, JESS has achieved a 100% pass rate for BTEC and this year, 75% of our students studying BTEC at JESS were awarded the highest possible D*D*D* grade. Two students have also excelled, a JESS student has been recognised by Pearson and awarded a Global Award (result embargoed until 7.30pm DST, 7 July 2011) and another student, Lewis Bonjean has gained a Rugby Sporting Scholarship to Central Washington University in the US.
Kosta Lekanides, Deputy Head of Sixth Form at JESS and Chair of the UAE Association of IB Schools explained the examination highlights this year: "In what has certainly been an eventful year, JESS students continued to push through with focus and determination and it brings me great joy to see their efforts rewarded with superb grades that allow them to access their universities of choice. As a school, we remain proud of their achievements through the last two years and confident in our own teaching and learning practices, which have seen all our students grow and develop in both ability and maturity of approach. The future remains bright for JESS students as we head into the next academic year".
Mr Mike Waller, Head of Secondary: “These results are a tremendous reflection of the commitment and resilience our students have shown over the two, extraordinary years. Each student should be rightfully proud of their accomplishments and should now step onto the next stage of their journey with the confidence that grows from overcoming adversity. Our staff have gone to great lengths to ensure that despite COVID disruptions, there has been continuity of learning and the same drive for excellence that permeates throughout the school.”
